History & background

Karnataka has a rich and diverse history that spans over 2,000 years. It was home to powerful South Indian dynasties such as the Kadambas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, and the mighty Vijayanagara Empire, whose capital Hampi is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The region flourished as a center of art, architecture, and learning, especially under the Hoysalas and Vijayanagara rulers. Later, parts of Karnataka came under the rule of Islamic sultanates like Bijapur and the Mysore Kingdom, which rose to prominence under Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan—both known for their resistance to British colonialism. Post Tipu Sultan’s fall in 1799, Mysore became a princely state under British rule until India's independence in 1947, after which the modern state of Karnataka was formed in 1956 through the reorganization of states based on linguistic lines.
